On July 12, of this year, Netflix released episode one of their now wildly popular series “Quarterback.” The first season of the show followed the seasons of Kirk Cousins, Patrick Mahomes, and Marcus Mariota.
The appeal of the show is that people get much more in-depth information into the lives, studying habits, and work ethic of these quarterbacks that they wouldn’t see otherwise. Also, the fact that all three players featured had much different journeys in the NFL and have different levels of respect around the league.
Netflix has obviously renewed the show for a second season. Now, the only question is who they will get to follow through the 2023-24 NFL season. They have tried to get the Eagles’ superstar Jalen Hurts and rising star Justin Fields, but they both declined.
It seems like they are trying to follow the same criteria as the first season. They are looking for a young quarterback who has already accomplished a ton in the NFL like Mahomes, a misunderstood veteran like Cousins, and someone fighting for their career like Mariota. There are many players that fit this criterion and here are a few.
Joe Burrow
There is no better choice for a young quarterback than Joe Burrow. In just three seasons Burrow has put up astronomical numbers, throwing for over 10,000 yards and almost 100 touchdowns.
This pales in comparison to the fact that he has already been to two AFC Championship games and has one super bowl appearance. He has the perfect balance between humility and confidence, and he is one of the most liked players in the league. He has proved to be a superstar at every turn, and he would be a perfect feature for the Netflix series.
Russell Wilson
While obviously, Wilson has had far more success in the league than Cousins has, the world mostly gets to see his professional side. He rarely gives people a glimpse into his personal life, so people draw their own conclusions about the person they think Wilson is based on rumors and reports they hear.
Although he’s achieved tons of success, there have been nasty reports over the past year about the type of person he was in Seattle, and they were not positive at all. A feature on “Quarterback” would give Wilson the chance to show the world the person he is or dispel rumors made about him. Who knows, maybe he could turn into the NFL world’s next darling like Cousins has due to the success of the show.
Baker Mayfield
I have covered the rollercoaster career of Mayfield once before, and those same reasons are why he would be a great candidate for the last chance quarterback. Much like Mariota, Mayfield was a high draft pick and had immense hype and pressure coming out of college. They briefly showed star potential, but right now it looks like that potential was just a flash in the pan for both.
Mayfield is playing in Tampa Bay this year where he will be the clear number one starter out of training camp. The only question is will he be able to capitalize on the opportunity, or will he succumb to the pressure like Mariota?
